It was a great week of training at Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where we had my good friends Rafael Lovato Jr and James Puopolo. Rafael was in town for both training and teaching at both the Kompound at my academy. Rafael is just over 7 weeks out from ADCC where he will be competing for the last time so this training trip kicked off his camp and will be the last he will be doing a seminar before the tournament. James Puopolo is a good friend, no-gi world champion himself and a student of Lovato Jr.
It was a great training focusing on a lot of passing and guard work with plenty of rounds from the feet as well.
At the seminar at the Kompound, Lovato Jr focused on guard retention to his 2 on 1 open guard and the links between closed, open and butterfly with the 2 on 1 grip. Then followed by standing techniques in the gi. At my academy he focused on passing the half guard with pressure and how those concepts related to side control.
It was a great time and I feel full of new information to share with my students and they are excited to try out the new stuff that Rafael shared with them. My next training trip will be at the end of July to help Lovato Jr, Victor Hugo and Felipe Costa get ready for the upcoming ADCC and CJI tournaments.
