We covered a lot of open guard setups and wrestle ups vs standing and kneeling opponents, leglocks and some options from the back. It was great to be on the mats with them, getting training in and looking ahead at their opponents that they will be going againts in Poland. I was also able to pick up a few tips and tricks from my instructor Xande Ribeiro that I will be sharing with advanced classes soon. - [2026 Annual BBQ – June 27th](https://juberajj.com/2026-annual-bbq-june-27th/): Our Annual BBQ is coming up! - [May 2026 was busy!](https://juberajj.com/may-2026-was-busy/): We started the month off on a high note with a trip to Palm Beach, Florida, where I had the opportunity to coach and help prepare world champion Rafael Lovato Jr. for his match against the always dangerous Vagner Rocha at Thug Trials 3. - [Kids Class Snow Closure](https://juberajj.com/kids-class-snow-closure/): No Kids Class 5/6 Due to Snow Closure. We follow BVSD.  - [Lovato Seminar & Self Defense](https://juberajj.com/lovato-seminar-self-defense/): May is shaping up to be an exciting month at our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Broomfield, Colorado. With special seminars, competition news, and a small schedule update, there’s a lot happening both on and off the mats. - [Gi Cleaning Tips](https://juberajj.com/gi-cleaning-tips/): By Michael B. If you’ve been training for any length of time, you’ve probably rolled with someone whose gi looked and smelled like it predates Noah’s Ark. You may have also been that person without knowing it. And if you’ve ever held up your gi after a training camp and genuinely couldn’t identify the origin of a stain, this post definitely applies to you. The cleanliness of your gi is a form of respect—for your training partners, for yourself, and for the art. BJJ demands a lot from your body and your mind. Treating your equipment with basic care is the least complicated way to honor that investment, and it takes little time, money, or effort. Here’s what actually works. The most important rule: wash it immediately. Not the next morning, not when you get around to it. When you get home, it goes in the machine. A damp gi sitting in a bag is a bacterial incubator, and the smell it produces is not something cold water fixes later. Washing Your White GiAlways use cold water. Heat permanently sets protein-based stains like sweat and blood, so warm water is working against you even when the gi looks clean going in. Wash it on its own. Gis are thick and need room to move through the water properly, and washing it separately keeps your other laundry from catching whatever the gi picked up on the mat. For detergent, use Tide Ultra OXI White and Bright, which is specifically formulated to brighten whites in cold water and is also color safe. Add OxiClean White Revive as a booster and Lysol Laundry Sanitizer to kill the bacteria responsible for odors. Lysol Sanitizer is designed to work at cold temperatures, so you’re not trading cleanliness for stain protection. For any set-in stains, the OxiClean gel stick applied directly before washing handles them without any soaking or additional steps. If your machine has a bright whites cycle, use it. Just set the temperature to cold if your machine allows it, as many modern machines do. The extended agitation and extra rinse are worth having. For drying, the dryer is where gis shrink and collars warp. Use the ultra low heat or air-only setting, or lay it flat on a drying rack. Washing Your Colored GiEverything above applies. Cold water matters even more here since warm water fades dye over time. Skip the White Revive and use a color-safe sport detergent instead. The Lysol Sanitizer and OxiClean gel stick still work great. Same drying rules. Don’t Forget Your BeltYour belt absorbs just as much sweat as the rest of your gi. Wash it. There is a persistent myth that washing your belt washes away your rank, which is not a real thing. What is a real thing is the smell of a belt that has never seen detergent. Cold water, same sanitizer, air dry or ultra low heat. That’s it. The people you train with will notice, and so will your gi three years from now when it still fits and doesn’t look or smell like a prehistoric dishrag. - [Spring Upcoming Events](https://juberajj.com/spring-upcoming-events/): We’ve got some exciting events coming up for our community here at Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu in Broomfield, Colorado. - [Victor Hugo wins $50K Grand Prix](https://juberajj.com/victor-hugo-wins-50k-grand-prix/): Victor Hugo Wins IBJJF Grand Prix — A Dominant, Smart Performance - [Great Start to 2026](https://juberajj.com/great-start-to-2026/): We started out the year with a visit from one of my favorite people to train with and one of athletes that I coach and corner Felipe Costa. Felipe has made a name for himself by winning No-Gi worlds and taking 3rd at ADCC while medaling in the major IBJJF gi tournaments. He is fresh off winning a match against New Wave/Kingsway competitor in December and winning another grappling title in Russia.  - [Lovato Jr beats Bodoni in Japan](https://juberajj.com/lovato-jr-beats-bodoni-in-japan/): On November 10th I headed to Tokyo, Japan to coach and corner multiple time world champion Rafael Lovato Jr against 2x ADCC Champion Giancarlo Bodoni at One FC 173 on PPV. With Lovato Jr being 42 years old compared to the 30 year old Giancarlo, most had us as the underdog. But Lovato was able to implement the game plan on the big stage and come back with a dominant victory.  - [Lovato Association Training](https://juberajj.com/lovato-association-training/): On Wed, October 22-25 I was invited to be the guest instructor at the Rafael Lovato Jr Association camp in Oklahoma City, Ok. This was a great opportunity to teach to about 30 of Lovato academy owners across the country, along with other visiting students. I taught No-Gi passing and answered questions with Day 1 focusing on outside passing and Day 2 focused on pressure passing.  - [Girls in Gis Arvada](https://juberajj.com/girls-in-gis-arvada/): Girls in Gis Colorado is back in town in nearby Arvada. On Sunday, October 16th from 12 - 3 PM. Our own Professor Tessa will be teaching. Suggested Donation is $20. - [Solid Series 2025](https://juberajj.com/solid-series-2025/): Our next tournament will be grappling industries on Oct 18th and Solid Series on November 15th. We will be a satellite weigh in location for the Solid Tournament. This tournament will be nearby in Superior Colorado just 15 minutes away from the academy.  - [Masters Worlds and CJI Results](https://juberajj.com/masters-worlds-and-cji-results/): A big congrats to Marc for winning his purple belt division last weekend at Master's Worlds! He has now won blue and purple belt. His energy and tenacity are an inspiration to the rest of the academy. Sometimes we have to have talks to keep him healthy, not competing too much and being smart on the mats because when he goes in to a tournament healthy he is a hard person to beat.  - [Back from Marcelo Garcia’s](https://juberajj.com/back-from-marcelo-garcias/): Last weekend I was fortunate enough to get to spend a week at Marcelo Garcia's new academy in Kailua, Hawaii. Training with Marcelo was on my bucket list and the experience exceeded my expectations. Marcelo was back to competition this year after a long hiatus and has a brand new academy in Hawaii that is only 7 months old. His academy is about the exact same size as ours and just the vibes and energy Marcelo brings to every practice is hard to put into words.  - [Rafael Lovato Jr Seminar – July 31st](https://juberajj.com/rafael-lovato-jr-seminar/): On Thursday, July 31st Rafael Lovato Jr will be hosting our first association wide seminar at the Colorado State Patrol in Golden, Colorado.  - [10 year Anniversary Party](https://juberajj.com/10-year/): We have crossed the 10 year mark of Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy being open in Broomfield, Colorado. As such we will be celebrating with a 2 day event on June 13th-14th. The open mats will be for current students only. Feel free to bring family and friends to the BBQ on Saturday. Very excited to have Victor Hugo who is a many time world champion and one of the top athletes in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu and my instructor Xande Ribeiro and Hall of Fame competitor still competing actively. In addition we will have a wrestling seminar from D1 National Champion Dave Zabriskie on Saturday morning.  - [Prof Tessa Wins Boston Open](https://juberajj.com/prof-tessa-wins-boston-open/): Congrats to Professor Tessa on winning the IBJJF Boston Open. She won all of her matches by submission with no points against. Here is her finals match where she shows some great open guard passing. - [Xande Wins WNO 27](https://juberajj.com/xande-wins-wno-27/): Eight of us headed down to Austin, Texas over April 18th-20th for training, coaching and fun. My instructor Xande Ribeiro competed at Who's Number One 27 along with Six Blades athlete Victor Hugo. Xande was the biggest draw of the night and came out to chants of his name. It was an honor to be warming him up and coaching him that night and I have a ton of gratitude for the many years we have spent training together. Richie was coached by Eddie Bravo and started with a heel hook attempt early in the match and Xande worked his pressure passing. At about 5 minutes in Xande was able to open up a double underhook pass after moving more to his offside, from there he transitioned to a side smash to an offside halfguard pass with the head wrap. From there he went for his signature Kimura from the underhook and got the tap. - [April Update](https://juberajj.com/april-update/): Congrats to Marc on winning IBJJF Pans at the end of March in the purple belt division. Back to his winning ways after a surgery last year.  - [Victor Hugo taps Nicky Rod](https://juberajj.com/victor-hugo-taps-nicky-rod/): This week I went out to Las Vegas Nevada to corner world champion Victor Hugo and also help world champion Felipe Costa as they competed at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 10. In the main event world champion Victor Hugo had a rematch against CJI champion Nicky Rod. It was a great match with Victor surprising Nicky with a uchi mata takedown in overtime, then was able to secure the back and finish with a clean rear naked choke. Nicky is known for his excellent wrestling and back defense so it was an amazing finish.  - [Feb Updates](https://juberajj.com/feb-updates/): We have some exciting things happening this month. I will be heading down to Six Blades HQ in  Austin to help multiple time world champion Victor Hugo get ready for a rematch against CJI champion Nicky Rod on UFC Fight Pass March 6th.  - [Easton Spring Open 2025](https://juberajj.com/easton-spring-open-2025/): The next tournament on our academy's schedule will be the Easton Open. This event will take place on April 5, 2025 in Littleton, Colorado at the South Suburban complex.  - [Xande Wins Europeans 2025](https://juberajj.com/xande-wins-europeans-2025/): Just a few weeks after training at our academy here in Colorado. Xande Ribeiro traveled to Portugal to compete at the IBJJF European Championships. It was his first return to competition in a couple years and he put on a show. Submitting 4 out of his 5 opponents on way to gold, and two of the submissions went to sleep. It was an awesome display of our Jiu-Jitsu and most of the moves he hit we focus on a lot in the beginner program. It was also fun to see him switch from the seatbelt control to double unders as we have been covering in advanced class lately so he could stay behind the triceps and get the win with an arm in ezekiel choke.  - [Perfect End of the Year Training](https://juberajj.com/perfect-end-of-the-year-training/): A perfect way to end the year training with my teacher Xande Ribeiro. It was awesome to have him out as he is preparing to enter the European Championships in January of 2025. Training with Xande always brings my Jiu-Jitsu back into focus on what is important. Seeing how he moves and counters so many difficult problems is always incredible. He also trained with many of my other black belts and was very complimentary in how much we represent his style of pressure and movement in Jiu-Jitsu.  - [Felipe Wins Worlds, Lovato Jr wins Pans](https://juberajj.com/felipe-wins-worlds-lovato-jr-wins-pans/): It has been a great end to the year for Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu. Two of my good friends and training partners Rafael Lovato Jr and Felipe Costa ended up taking home the gold at three of the biggest No-Gi competitions of the year.  - [Dr Peter Attia: Jiu-Jitsu for Bone Health](https://juberajj.com/dr-peter-attia-jiu-jitsu-for-bone-health/): My mother-in-law was listening to Peter Attia-MD's podcast about bone health and she let me know that he was discussing how studies show Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best sports for bone health. He also mentioned how 2 out of his 3 kids train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and how while he doesn't practice it himself he does watch it a lot. Attia is one of the must influential people in the world on health and in known for his insights into longevity. Bone health is so critical to develop early in life and sedentary people have so many issues with bone health later in life.  - [Victor Hugo Seminar Oct 12](https://juberajj.com/victor-hugo-seminar-this-saturday/): Saturday, October 12th we will be hosting 4x Black Belt World Champion Victor Hugo. Victor was the 2023 open weight world champion. He was the first person in over a decade to win his open weight finals match by submission. He is a no gi and gi world champion as well.  - [ADCC 2024 Results](https://juberajj.com/adcc-2024-results/): Just want to share how proud I am of the performances by my team mates Rafael Lovato Jr and Felipe Costa on their silver and bronze medal respectively at the 2024 ADCC championship. I have been helping Lovato Jr prepare for this tournament for many years and to see him make it back to the finals at the age of 40 is incredible. He had a sick guillotine in the quarter finals against a very tough Patrick Gaudio. A move that he has always been tweaking to make work for his body type.  - [Upcoming Events](https://juberajj.com/upcoming-events/): We are looking at the weekend of Sept 21st for our Annual BBQ.  - [Elbow Workout for Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/elbow-workout-for-jiu-jitsu/): I got this workout from Professor Maki so if you have elbows that are bothering you I think this really compliments all the gripping and pulling that we do. 4 easy exercises are easy to do. If your elbows are really bugging you, do these exercises a few times a day.  - [Coming Back After a Break](https://juberajj.com/coming-back-after-a-break/): Another student requested blog article here from Pete. So he asked about coming back to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after a break, some time off. Knock on wood, I haven't had too many extended periods of time off from Jiu-Jitsu. But it isn't unusual for life events to come up that require some time away. Whether work gets busy, a new addition to the family, injuries, moving to a new location. Things pop up. Preemptively, try to stay as consistent as you can, even if it is just once a week or watching class and taking notes. I always think that the people who still come in and do those things have an easier time than those who don't. You can also stay connected by reading Saulo Ribeiro's Jiu-Jitsu University, studying film at BJJFanatics.com (myself and my instructor Xande are on there along with other Six Blade competitors like Rafael Lovato Jr and Victor Hugo). - [ADCC & CJI Training + More](https://juberajj.com/adcc-cji-training-more/): Last week I went to Six Blades Headquarters in Austin, Texas to help Rafael Lovato Jr, Victor Hugo and Felipe Costa get ready for their ADCC and CJI tournaments that happen in Las Vegas in a few weeks. It was tremendous training with my instructor Xande Ribeiro and no-gi world champion James Puopolo as well. Rafael's is going for his last ADCC, Felipe Costa for his first and Victor Hugo will be competing for a million dollars at CJI. I feel like the last trip that Lovato Jr and Puopolo did in Colorado helped my timing and prepared me for this trip nicely. Being able to work through some guard retention material with Xande always simplifies and improves my game. I came back with pages of notes to share with my students.  - [Week of Lovato Jr](https://juberajj.com/week-of-lovato-jr/): It was a great week of training at Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where we had my good friends Rafael Lovato Jr and James Puopolo. Rafael was in town for both training and teaching at both the Kompound at my academy. Rafael is just over 7 weeks out from ADCC where he will be competing for the last time so this training trip kicked off his camp and will be the last he will be doing a seminar before the tournament. James Puopolo is a good friend, no-gi world champion himself and a student of Lovato Jr.  - [IBJJF Denver Open Pics](https://juberajj.com/ibjjf-denver-open-pics/): We had a great showing at the 2024 IBJJF Denver open taking home a bunch of medals. Thanks to Joe for the great pics. I thought the team had a great showing, were more coachable and it was a great prep for those competing at Worlds.  - [IBJJ Nashville Open](https://juberajj.com/ibjj-nashville-open/): We sent a small crew down to the IBJJF Nashville Open to compete a few weekends ago. The highlight was Dwi winning his absolute (open-weight division). Here is the final match where you can see him using some nice open guard to get on top, pass his opponents guard before finishing with a bow and arrow choke. - [2nd Place Team at Grappling Industries](https://juberajj.com/2nd-place-team-at-grappling-industries/): Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu went to Northglenn, CO on April 7th. It was a first tournament for many of our students but we came away with a 2nd Place team trophy in the adult division. It was great to see the hard work of our Saturday competition class and Thursday Women's competition class paying off.  - [Lovato Prep, Hugo Wins](https://juberajj.com/lovato-prep-hugo-wins/): Last weekend I was traveling to Oklahoma City to help Rafael Lovato Jr get ready for his next match against the very talented Craig Jones. Craig has a tricky style that has been fun to gameplan for. It was a great trip and thought we made some great progress while out there. Lovato posted the following about the trip and I am appreciative of the kind words.  - [Jubera BJJ Wins Grappling Industries](https://juberajj.com/jubera-bjj-wins-grappling-industries/): On Saturday, January 20th. Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu took home the 1st place team trophy for adults at Grappling Industries, Denver with our scrappy crew of about 9 competitors. In addition to the chest-sized team medal we brought home 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.  - [WNO Training and More](https://juberajj.com/wno-training-and-more/): So this year is getting started right! After the team competes in the next Grappling Industries tournament this weekend, I will be heading down to Austin run some training for the current open-weight world champion in BJJ Victor Hugo. He will be going against the very talented and ADCC finalist Nicky Rodriquez in WNO (Who's Number One). This will be a great matchup and it will be great to see Victor working his magic against one of the best guard passers in No-Gi. I am sure it will be amazing training with Victor, Felipe Costa and our newest no-gi world champ Steve Hargett.  - [Film Study for BJJ](https://juberajj.com/film-study-for-bjj/): I was asked by a student (Pete) how I watch video for BJJ and I believe video is an source of information and is one of the reasons for that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolves so quickly. People are studying matches and technique more than ever before, but there are a couple of traps to watch out for.  - [Timeless Armbar](https://juberajj.com/timeless-armbar/): I got to teach at Lovato Jiu-Jitsu 30th Anniversary seminar this fast armbar. Check it out below.  - [Awesome Student Updates](https://juberajj.com/awesome-student-updates/): I just wanted to give a big congrats to two of our longtime students. Tamsin for her outstanding success in getting accepting into the very prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)! That is a ridiculous accomplishment for a high schooler.  - [Holiday Schedule 2023](https://juberajj.com/holiday-schedule-2023/): 12/25 Mo: Closed12/26 Tu: 3:55 PM (4-7) and 4:30 (ages 7-15 combined). No 5:15 PM12/27 We: Closed12/28 Th: 3:55 PM (4-7) and 4:30 (ages 7-15 combined). No 5:15 PM01/01 Mo: Closed01/02 Tu: Resume normal schedule - [Lovato, Hugo and Roger](https://juberajj.com/lovato-hugo-and-roger/): On Wednesday, Nov 15th I headed back to Oklahoma City for 4 days of training Rafael Lovato Jr to help him prepare for his WNO title fight against the very tough Pedro Marinho. It had only been a few months since I was last there, and had trained with Lovato last month as well while he was in Colorado but it was amazing training. Also in the house was current absolute and ultra heavyweight  black belt world champion Victor Hugo and world medalist Felipe Costa. Plus my good friend and no -gi world champion James Puopolo.  - [Sophia McDermott Seminar and Girls in Gis](https://juberajj.com/sophia-mcdermott-seminar-and-girls-in-gis/): Our next seminar will be with Sophia McDermott on November 18th. This seminar is open to all academies. Please Register for the seminar here. We are very excited to have Sophia back here in Broomfield at Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  - [Fargo Trip and Lovato Jr Training](https://juberajj.com/fargo-trip-and-lovato-jr-training/): It was great to travel to Fargo, ND a few weekends ago to put on a seminar for George and Sarah's students at Fargo BJJ and their Grand Forks students as well. We covered a lot of head pressure passing concepts and a lot on cross knee passing, weave passing ways to shut down the knee shield. Then in no gi we covered a variety of material including takedowns, passing and some leglock material for their no gi crew. They have an amazing student base and home grown culture. I first met George at Easton BJJ in 2007 so it is great to see what he and Sarah have built there the last 15 years. It was also cool to pick up some half guard details from some of their guys as well which I think will fit in our student games back in Colorado.  - [Sophia McDermott Seminar](https://juberajj.com/sophia-mcdermott-seminar/): Sophia McDermott will be returning to Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to teach an seminar open to anyone at November 18th and will be followed by a female only workshop. She is a 4-time Pan American Champion and taught an amazing seminar earlier this year.  - [Rodrigo Pagani Seminar, October 28th](https://juberajj.com/rodrigo-pagani-seminar-october-28th/): We are excited to have out Professor Rodrigo Pagani. Fresh after the Master's Worlds win of Colby Mowery last month we are having his Professor out for a seminar. Professor Pagani runs the  CuruCuruLand academy and association out of Niterói, Brazil. He won the Brazilian Nationals tournament several times. He is one of the old school black belts of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu getting his black belt over 20 years ago. - [Fargo BJJ Seminar](https://juberajj.com/fargo-bjj-seminar/): This weekend I will be teaching in Fargo, North Dakota both Gi and No-Gi guard passing technique at Fargo BJJ. I will be going over head pressure passing which is a form of high tripod passing that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your partner or opponents head. Then we will be applying these passing concepts to no-gi as well. - [Rash Guards for Maui Fires](https://juberajj.com/rash-guards-for-maui-fires/): Introducing our short sleeve Maui Rashguard – a fusion of performance, style, and philanthropy. Elevate your training experience while making a positive contribution to the victims of the recent fires in Lahaina.  - [Masters Worlds Results](https://juberajj.com/masters-worlds-results/): Over labor day weekend, we have a handful of athletes compete in the biggest BJJ tournament of the year, the Masters Worlds Championships. It was a tremendous success for our students and I very proud of my students for working hard and putting it on the line in Las Vegas. - [Conditioning for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/conditioning-for-brazilian-jiu-jitsu/): One of my students asked me about extra conditioning for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I always preface that the most important part of conditioning is your mat time. That has to be priority number one because with a big enough skill difference you can make your opponents work so much harder than you need to. But maybe if you are getting ready for a tournament or are injured and just need to keep in shape here is a protocol I have used for way too long. Taku's intervals.  - [Summer BBQ](https://juberajj.com/summer-bbq/): Our annual summer bbq is here this weekend at 1PM, Saturday Aug 26th. The address is 3276 W 103rd Pl, Westminster, CO, 80031. (Competition training is moved to 8:30 AM) - [Lovato Jiu-Jitsu 30th Anniversary](https://juberajj.com/lovato-jiu-jitsu-30th-anniversary/): I just got back from a 3 day trip to OKC to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Lovato's School of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Straight from the flight it was rounds with Lovato Jr as he prepares to get ready for Master's Worlds and a WNO championship match at the end of Sept. Friday we did more positional training as Victor Hugo, Xande Ribeiro, Felipe Costa, James Puopolo made it into town as we focused on open guard and back attacks. So many world champions, world championship medalists. Saturday was a lot of rounds and was one of the best training rooms I have been in as Yan Pica Pau and wrestling coach Nick Heflin joined the fun. There were more than 30 black belts training and it was fun to leave more blood and sweat on the mats. I think I went through 4 bottles of gatorade.  - [Six Blades Lake Travis Seminar](https://juberajj.com/six-blades-lake-travis-seminar/): On June 10th, 2023 I was honored to teach a seminar at Six Blades Lake Travis BJJ (aka Flow Institute) and home of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor Victor Hugo who was the 2023 Absolute World Champion. It was one week after his double gold performance where he finished both his final matches in his weight class and the absolute division with finishes. It was a ton of fun showing head pressure passing to his students.  - [August Schedule Changes](https://juberajj.com/august-schedule-changes/): August is going to bring some exciting schedule changes!  - [Victor Hugo Absolute World Champion](https://juberajj.com/victor-hugo-absolute-world-champion/): On Sunday June 4th, Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu claimed the biggest title in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Victor Hugo winning the 2023 Absolute (open-weight) World Championship along with the his weight class division as well claiming his 3rd and 4th world championships in the gi. He is the first Six Blades athlete to do so since Xande Ribeiro did it last in 2008. It is an amazing accomplishment and he did it in style winning both his finals matches by submission.  - [Grappling Industries Results, Wyoming Seminar](https://juberajj.com/grappling-industries-results-wyoming-seminar/): On May 23rd youth and adult team members fought really well and represented the academy with great compete and sportsmanship at the Grappling Industries tournament in Lakewood, Colorado. It is awesome seeing all the hard work pay off. In the adults we placed 5th as a team out of 75 teams with 4 gold medals, 1 silver and 3 bronze.  - [Lovato Jr Closed Guard Back Take](https://juberajj.com/lovato-jr-closed-guard-back-take/): My good friend and training partner showed off some Timeless Jiu-Jitsu in last night WNO co-main event by taking off the very tough Elder "El Monstro" Cruz. Cruz is a very tough competitor who made a name for himself by taking out Patrick Gaudio at the last ADCC. Cruz started the match strong with a lateral drop takedown, but Lovato was able to come back and finish the match with a rear naked choke after a beautiful muscle sweep to closed guard back sequence seen below.  - [100% Gold at IBJJF Denver Open](https://juberajj.com/denver-open-results/): We sent a small team to compete in the Denver Open and they all came back with gold medals! - [Sophia McDermott Seminar – May 6th](https://juberajj.com/sophia-mcdermott-seminar-may-6th/): We are very excited to be hosting Gi and No-Gi World Champion Sophia McDermott at our BJJ school in Broomfield, Colorado. This seminar is happening at 1 PM on Saturday May 6th.  - [Lovato Seminar & Tournaments](https://juberajj.com/lovato-seminar-tournaments/): World Champion in Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu and undefeated MMA champion Rafael Lovato Jr was in Colorado this week and it was a great experience get training with him throughout the week and have him teach a seminar at our BJJ school in Broomfield, CO this last weekend. He covered side butterfly guard which is a type of open guard focused on sweeps, back takes and a few submissions that fit right into our game. I love having him out because with our similar styles I feel like the technique clicks into place and my students can immediately implement it. It was also great to get a few days or training no-gi and wrestling with him and my wrestling coach Dave as well. Nothing like having world champion jiu-jitsu and national champion wrestling mixing it up and sharing ideas.  - [Colorado Spring Grappling Industries](https://juberajj.com/colorado-spring-grappling-industries/): In a tournament that we didn't push, we had 3 kids and one adult compete at Grappling Industries in Colorado Springs. It was great to see such awesome results from our kids. Our kids came back with a lot of gold medals and one silver with only one loss on the whole day. It was Sean's first tournament so we were super proud of him and Lincoln's first gold medals.  - [Memphis IBJJF Open Results](https://juberajj.com/memphis-ibjjf-open-results/): On Saturday, Feb 19th, 2023 my black belt Todd Kornfield won his black belt division at the Memphis IBJJF open, all by submissions showing a terrific closed guard. Here is his finals match where he won by flying triangle into an inverted armbar. - [Wrestlers Qualify for States](https://juberajj.com/wrestlers-qualify-for-states/): Fort Collins hosted a their wrestling 5A regional over Feburary 10th and 11th. I was super proud to see 3 of our youth athletes on the podium and qualifying for states this coming weekend at Ball Arena. James Escalera, Johnny Escalera and Matthew Fasbender all qualified. It has been a awesome to see these athletes grow up over the years and definitely was proud of what they accomplished out there. Johnny and James won their divisions while Matthew took 3rd the their divisions.  - [Best Shoulder Workout for BJJ](https://juberajj.com/best-shoulder-workout-for-bjj/): I get asked a lot what I do for shoulder injury prevention and rehab. I had some pretty severe nerve impingement in 2016 which left me unable to lift a pitcher of water above shoulder height. It was something that was pretty scary having just opened my academy in Broomfield. Because of the tingling in my index finger I was very worried that it was an issue in my cervical spine. Due to the los of strength, I got an MRI for my neck. Luckily they said that my neck looked okay and that left nerve impingement in my shoulder. I was doing some shoulder workouts like what was prescribed for baseball pitchers, but wasn't seeing any improvement.  - [January Update](https://juberajj.com/january-update/): On Saturday, January 28th 2023 we sent a small team to Lakewood, Colorado to compete in the first tournament of the year. A lot were with either new to competition or new to competing in their belt. Honestly I thought the timing was a bit iffy because with the holidays it was going to take a lot of their effort to get in shape and with the new year and the Six Blades Anniversary in Austin, we weren't going to be running competition classes for it.  - [Lovato to MMA with win via Kimura](https://juberajj.com/lovato-to-mma-with-win-via-kimura/): After a 3 year hiatus from MMA due to brain cavernoma, my good friend Rafael Lovato Jr returned to MMA with a victory via kimura in the 1st round over the previously undefeated Taiga Iwasaki. Rafael was the previous Bellator MMA champion but had to vacate his belt due to the diagnosis of his brain condition. You can hear more about his diagnosis on this episode of the Joe Rogan podcast. After a busy year of winning the IBJJF European championship, taking 4th in ADCC and becoming a dad to twins, Rafael finished off the year with this mma victory. It was awesome to see his wife and Xande Ribeiro in the crowd holding the babies. Fighting in Japan was always on the bucket list for Lovato and I am glad to see him finish off the year in style. - [2022 Holiday Schedule](https://juberajj.com/2022-holiday-schedule/): As we close out 2022 here is our holiday schedule - [Girls in Gis, Dec 10th](https://juberajj.com/girls-in-gis-dec-10th/): This Saturday, December 10th 2022 we will be hosting a Girls in Gis event at our academy. This academy is open to women and girls of all ages and no experience is necessary. Register for the event here. This event will be led by our own Professor Tessa and Coach Hannah. The event will run from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM MST. - [BJJ Results: Grappling Industries Denver](https://juberajj.com/bjj-results-grappling-industries-denver/): on November 5, 2022 Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sent a team to Grappling Industries Denver at the Foothills Field House in Lakewood about a 40 minutes away from our home in Broomfield, Colorado.  - [Upcoming Events Oct/Nov](https://juberajj.com/upcoming-events-oct-nov/): We have a busy next 4 weeks here at Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Broomfield, CO. Already competition classes are underway with Kids competition classes on Friday nights with Coach Hannah while myself and Professor Will run competition classes for adults on Saturday at 12:30. This will all be in prep for the November 5th Grappling Industries in Lakewood, CO. - [Top Things I Learned this Year](https://juberajj.com/top-things-i-learned-this-year/): Another year of training is coming to an end, but I am very grateful for  my friends and training partners and the things that they have shared with me so I thought I would put some of them down here.  - [Takeaways from ADCC Training Camp](https://juberajj.com/takeaways-from-adcc-training-camp/): Last week I was in Oklahoma City with BJJ world champions Xande Ribeiro, Rafael Lovato Jr and Victor Hugo as they did their last hard week before ADCC which happens this Saturday, 9/17/22 and 9/18/22 in Las Vegas. Xande is a multiple time ADCC champion and Rafael Lovato Jr is a silver medalist. This will be Victor Hugo's second tournament after having a terrific first showing a few years ago. I have been helping Xande and Lovato prepare for every ADCC since 2005 so this was a nostalgic camp for me as it marks the last year Xande and Lovato will be competing.  - [Great Results at Grappling Industries](https://juberajj.com/great-results-at-grappling-industries/): This Saturday, Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competed in the Grappling Industries Tournament and out of 70+ teams represented we came away with second place as a team! We were leading after the Gi divisions, but only had a couple competitors in No-Gi. I am super pumped about the results and showed the hard work that the competitors put in the last handful of weekends in the competition class.  - [BJJ Competition Routine](https://juberajj.com/bjj-competition-routine/): When going into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition you must be prepared physically and mentally. Part of mental toughness for competition is a consistent routine that will take place before and after the matches.  - [7 AM Classes starting in August](https://juberajj.com/7-am-classes-starting-in-august/): We will be adding 7 AM classes to our schedule starting in August. We are looking for your input on which days you would prefer. Please fill out the form below to help us out! - [Summer BBQ June 4th](https://juberajj.com/summer-bbq-june-4th/): Our annual summer BBQ is Saturday, June 4th at 3 PM. There will be kids and adults there, feel free to bring others as well.  - [Upcoming Events and Schedule Changes](https://juberajj.com/spring-summer-events-2022/): We will be starting a Sunday No-Gi class at 10:00 AM. This will move the No-Gi open mat to 11:00 am.  - [Best Restaurants in Broomfield, CO](https://juberajj.com/best-restaurants-in-broomfield-co/): We get hungry after practice so here is the list of local spots we usually hit up. - [Kids BJJ Belt System](https://juberajj.com/kids-ibjjf-belt-system/): The most widely spread kids belt system is from the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). Unfortunately this belt system only came out in 2012 so many schools had variations on this belt system and had to decide whether to switch their kids over to the new system or stay with their old one. There are even variations within the IBJJF belt system on whether the stripes should be given monthly or 3 or 4 times a year. So while the belts themselves would be given at the same spacing, the stripes can be different. At our academy in Broomfield, we follow the IBJJF belt system with monthly stripes which is probably the most common among academies. We feel that this gives the students the most consistent feedback.  - [Frequently Asked Questions](https://juberajj.com/frequently-asked-questions/): For a contact sport, yes. When looking at injuries per 1000 competitors BJJ is about 4x safer than football and 2x safer than soccer. It is about 3x safer than other martial arts like Tae Kwon Do and Judo. Plus practice in the academy is going to be safer than going at a more intense competition speed. - [BJJ Westminster, Colorado](https://juberajj.com/bjj-westminster-colorado/): If you are looking for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Westminster, Colorado you might not realize how conveniently we are located here at Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We are easy to get to from Westminster exits off highway 36 by heading north off Sheridan exit or the Church Ranch. Since Westminster has a population about double that of Broomfield so we probably have about as many residents from Westminster training at our academy as Broomfield.  - [Takeaways from Grappling Industries](https://juberajj.com/takeaways-from-grappling-industries/): On Saturday February 5th, we sent a small crew over over 7 athletes over Grappling Industries Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament at the Foothills Fieldhouse in Denver, Colorado. With over 75 teams competing our crew brought home a 5th place finish in the adults gi and no-gi including 5 gold medals, 3 silvers and a bronze. So 9 medals among 7 athletes is amazing! I was very proud of the crew they came with great energy and made some on the fly adjustments to take home some nice medals.  - [Judo or Wrestling Takedowns for Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/judo-or-wrestling-takedowns-for-jiu-jitsu/): So most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors or academies aren't known for their takedowns. Saulo and Xande Ribeiro are very well known for their takedowns and I have been lucky enough to learn from and train with some amazing wrestlers and judoka. I started wrestling before I started BJJ and started Judo shortly after starting Jiu-Jitsu. I think for most kids and adults wrestling takedowns are better to learn, but there are pros and cons of each.  - [What are the best mats for Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/what-are-the-best-mats-for-jiu-jitsu/): Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students spend most of their time on the mats so what they train on is important for their health and longevity. I have trained on a ton of different surfaces from wrestling and gymnastics mats, home setups and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy setups. The main suppliers of mats are Fuji, Zebra, Swain/Dollamur.  - [Strength Training for Jiu Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/strength-training-for-jiu-jitsu/): As a caveat, I am an intermediate lifter, but I think it is important to think about how weight lifting should be incorporated into your overall plan of being a better Jiu-Jitsu athlete. Often times we see an athlete lose a match or even some in class training to a stronger athlete and think that they should be more emphasis on strength training to the detriment of their Jiu Jitsu training. This couldn't be further from the truth. You need to continue skill acquisition as you build your strength. I have seen first hand a blue belt go from losing a match to getting into CrossFit to improve their strength to opening a CrossFit gym, never moving past purple belt and then getting out of CrossFit to just focus on power lifting. Okay, that guy got stronger, but for what reason. Also I would say that I being strong in the gym doesn't correlate to feeling strong on the mat, you need technique to bridge the gap. One of the best closed guard players that I have ever trained in, was a lanky friend that couldn't do 2 pullups. Sometimes those guys with long levers aren't naturally good at moving a weight through space. On the other hand, strength training is important to grappling and just improving your life as you age.  - [How Often Should You Train BJJ](https://juberajj.com/how-much-should-you-train-bjj/): The answer to this question really depends on your situation and goals so we have broken this down by whether you are doing BJJ as a hobby or to compete. Generally sessions in BJJ last an hour for class and sparring sessions can go longer than that. Finding an amount of training that fits your goals and lifestyle for the long run is what is best. That doesn’t mean that more is better. Consistency is the main ingredient to growth as a Martial Artist. When you are starting out, go slow and then dial up your training to meet your goals.  - [Be the Gift](https://juberajj.com/be-the-gift/): We have so much to be thankful for this year now being fully open and training BJJ after the pandemic. We talk about being grateful and having gratitude so much with our youth and adult members, it is really nice to give back our time to the community around us. One of our blue belts, runs BeTheGift.com "a local nonprofit in Colorado that believes some of the greatest heroes of our time are single moms who give their lives to raise their children and provide for them." Be the Gift provides them a safer, healthier and more functioning home in which to raise their children. Think about it as handyman service for single moms.  - [Weight Loss for Jiu Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/weight-loss-for-jiu-jitsu/): I have competed in a lot of different weight classes over the years. When I started Jiu-Jitsu I had just finished my senior season of high school wrestling at 145lbs. I stayed around that 150 lbs for the first 3 years of my Jiu-Jitsu and then bulked up a little bit to get to 175 by the end of college. From there I spent most of the next 10 years competing in the middle heavy division at around 190 lbs, but I got as light at 175 again and fluctuated about 210. I think a key to my longevity as a competitor was not having to cut a lot of weight for most of my career, especially in high school. So I don't recommend my students cut much at all especially in their first 5 years or so. I think that can kill a love for the art and the sport so it isn't something I believe in much. That being said here are my stages for weight loss whether you are just trying to lose a couple pounds after the pandemic or more than that.  - [Importance of Journaling for BJJ](https://juberajj.com/importance-of-journaling-for-bjj/): I think journaling is an underrated tool in the quest for mastery and especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Most people have the wrong idea about journaling where you are going to be writing down every step of every technique in a class. And with each class having several techniques and 3-10 steps then that is going to be a ton of writing. That would be a bit daunting of a task, maybe something that you start doing and then throw away because exhausted after class you are too tired to complete it and then the next day you have forgotten some steps and feel defeated. So here are some tips for a better journal.  - [Friends of the Academy](https://juberajj.com/friends-of-the-academy/): I have gotten to meet so many amazing people through the academy. If you are looking for an academy to train at while visiting a new area check these out.  - [What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/what-is-brazilian-jiu-jitsu/): Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, sometimes referred to as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that specializes in grappling techniques such as chokeholds and joint locks. It is traditionally practiced in a uniform called a gi, while currently no-gi (or submission wrestling) is also popular as well. Striking is covered from a self-defense perspective where you learn to protect yourself against such attacks as punches, haymakers, etc but generally your goal is to subdue your opponent by taking them to the ground and finishing with a joint lock or choke. In training students will often start from the ground because that is where 90% of the technique happens and even from specific positions such as mount, side control or the guard. Tapping is a way to give up without suffering injury and allows students to train safely. - [Head Pressure Passing System Released](https://juberajj.com/first-dvd-released/): I am really excited to release my first DVD Head Pressure Passing System through BJJ Fanatics. It is my hope that it is the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction on passing out there because it a concept based system that will allow you to beat a variety of guards that you see. You can find it https://bjjfanatics.com/collections/all/products/the-head-pressure-passing-system-by-matt-jubera - [Best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class Format](https://juberajj.com/best-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-classes/): What makes the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class format? There are a bunch of ways to format a BJJ class and quite a difference in feel and format. I think the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class has to be formatted for beginners specifically.  - [3 Kids I am Proud Of](https://juberajj.com/3-kids-i-am-proud-of/): I have three youth program students that I think about a lot. None of them are pictured in the image for this post. None of them have won any medals or a match in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but all three of them used what we show in the kids class to defend themselves against older, bigger and stronger humans than themselves.  - [Essential BJJ Gear](https://juberajj.com/essential-bjj-gear/): When you are starting out in BJJ it is important to figure out what other gear you might need. Really you don't need much other than your gi and a some rash guards, but everyone wants to geek out when they start out a new hobby. Usually you will get a starter gi or kimono when you first sign up. I would pickup at least a 2nd gi in the same color for ease of doing laundry. You can see a list of our recommended gi's here. If you are training 3 days a week you could pick up a 3rd gi. You will also get a belt as well, you have the option of buying your own belt outside of the academy. As an academy owner I have several belts on hand (even black belts forget their belt sometime), but I don't think I ever had a spare belt before then.  - [What is a BJJ class like](https://juberajj.com/what-is-a-bjj-class-like/): To help you get comfortable for your first BJJ class, let's break it down a bit.  - [BJJ Allowed Moves, Etiquette and Hygiene](https://juberajj.com/bjj-etiquette-and-hygiene/): We have posters like this around the academy to make it easier to know moves are allowed and some safety tips as well. BJJ isn't a free for all where you are allowed to do any move you saw on YouTube on an unsuspecting partner.  ## Pages - [Snow Day Closed March 14, 24](https://juberajj.com/snow-day-closed-march-14-24/): Following the BVSD school system and a weather report that says this storm is sticking around through the day we will be closed today march 14th and plan on reopening tomorrow. - [Prospect](https://juberajj.com/prospect/): Enter Their Informatiion (No SMS will be sent) - [Martial Arts](https://juberajj.com/martial-arts/): We know that finding the right martial arts school can be overwhelming, our priority is to help you and/or your child become better versions of yourselves.  - [Pricing](https://juberajj.com/pricing/): You agree to receive emails and SMS from Jubera Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu about our programs. We will not share your information.  - [WalkIn](https://juberajj.com/walkin/): Enter Your Info! - [Graphics](https://juberajj.com/graphics/) - [Thank You](https://juberajj.com/thank-you/): We will be reaching out to you to answer any questions. We are a beginner friendly school and most of our students start with no experience.  - [Getting Started](https://juberajj.com/getting-started/): Getting started is easy at Jubera Jiu-Jitsu. The first step is to use the contact form below. We will get in touch with you to find about your goals and where you are starting at. Don't worry, you don't have to be in amazing shape to get going. We have students as young as 4 and older students in their late 60s. We will schedule an intro lesson with you where you will get 1 on 1 time with our coaches to prepare you for your first class. From there you will get into your first group class with an assigned coach. We will have a uniform here, but feel free to bring in athletic apparel for underneath. After the class we will go through the different schedules we have available for you. If you have experience, then your introductory lesson will be a bit more a private lesson before jumping into the group class. - [COVID-19](https://juberajj.com/covid-19/): We take COVID-19 seriously and are happy to provide one of the best ventilated academies out there with three 6-ton a/c units which should give air changes every 5 minutes which is beyond most hospital requirements. This swiss study showed that badly ventilated classrooms infected students at a rate of "six times as many cases as the better ventilated ones." Most academies are run out of light industrial buildings which barely provide any circulation at all compared to ours which again is beyond hospital requirements. I consult with my students who are on the front lines of this disease as to how to best safely continue training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during this pandemic. Broomfield is also one of the safest counties in Colorado in one of the safest states.  - [Schedule](https://juberajj.com/schedule/):  We are open 7 days a week. - [Contact](https://juberajj.com/contact/): The way to get started in training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at our academy is by contacting us! Fill out the form below and we will give you a call back. We will answer any questions you have and schedule a one on one session with you or your child. After that they will participate in a group class to try out our classes for themselves. We pride ourselves on our beginner friendly atmosphere.  - [No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/nogijiujitsu/): Our No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu program is based on the ADCC winning style of Xande Ribeiro. This is where the simplicity and elegance of our Jiu-Jitsu crosses over easily into no-gi training. Professor Jubera is an accomplished No-Gi competitor taking 3rd at the No-Gi World Championships. He has helped ADCC Champions Saulo Ribeiro, Xande Ribeiro and No-Gi World Champions Rafael Lovato Jr, James Poupolo, Victor Hugo and Felipe Costa and others train for many of their camps  and superfights over the years. With our pressure passing systems as a top player and the proper control of distance through frames and knee shields, the no-gi game isn't as big of a jump for our students as it is for many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies. - [Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/kids-jiu-jitsu/): We start every Kids Jiu-Jitsu class with our call/response Black Belt Pledge: - [Intermediate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/intermediatebjj/): Our intermediate & Advanced program is designed to take our students from 6 months to black belt belt. While the beginner classes focus on self defense and preparing the students to train live, the intermediate and advanced program starts to add more guards and techniques and expand the student's knowledge of the techniques available.  - [Beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu](https://juberajj.com/beginner-bjj/): When you are looking for a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy you want to find the best place for beginner BJJ students. We want to ignite your love of BJJ. You will find other beginning students enjoying these classes available throughout the week. Take your time and enjoy being a beginner student. Classes generally will have a warmup, followed by standing technique and two ground techniques from a position of the week. These techniques will be shown in a rotating curriculum which allows new people to enroll throughout the curriculum. - [Instructors](https://juberajj.com/instructors1/): Professor Matt Jubera is a multiple time World Champion and Pan American Champion. He is the first person that Xande Ribeiro (7-time world champion) put a black belt around and is Saulo Ribeiro's 4th American black belt. Saulo and Xande Ribeiro are two of the top competitors of all time and known for their coaching skills after authoring the best selling book Jiu-Jitsu University. Professor Matt's competition accolades, lineage of instructors and passion for teaching make Jubera Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu the best place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Colorado. - [Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)](https://juberajj.com/): Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives your child the best martial arts for kids because it focuses on grappling instead of punching and kicking. Your child will grow in this challenging, but safe environment while learning focus, respect and self-discipline. - [About Me](https://juberajj.com/about-me/): Hi my name is Matt welcome to my site
